I have played Dragon & Knights as soon as it came out so I can write this review for you, and although the game was released in December 2018 it looks much older because of the theme. Merkur Gaming are all over the place with this one, and sadly, the card symbols are more visible than the most powerful symbols in the game. But if you look beyond the not-so-good theme, you might find a quality slot game. Let’s have a look if this is so.
Main game and paytable
The paytable starts with the five card symbols, and these don’t pay much, as usual. For four-of-a-kind win you will at least get your stake back though, and for five-of-a-kind you can look forward to a prize of 2.50x or 5x your bet, the latter being the case for Ace and King. Three medium-value symbols pay either 12.50x or 15x your bet for five-of-a-kind, then there’s a symbol that pays 25x, and the Castle, the best symbol in the game, that pays 50x.
The paytable is therefore quite decent, it progresses nicely from those small prizes all the way up to a 50x win. The only problem here is that all five main symbols look alike, so you’ll need to learn to distinguish between them when they all land on your reels together.
The game has theoretical return to player (RTP) of 96.05%, which is quite good and is in line with modern standards, yet the slot game plays more or less like a classic slot. This means that classic slot players may be interested in Dragon & Knights as it gives them the same classic slot experience, with a good theoretical payout, and a unique way to trigger the free spins game.
Bonus features
There are two meters in the base game that dictate the number and quality of your free spins once you trigger the feature. The Freegames Meter has five levels and it can award you 5, 8, 12, 16 or 20 free spins. You advance to the next level when a Wild lands on the dedicated position on reel 1, indicated by a red square. The Multiplier Meter works in the same way, except that you need to land a Wild on reel 5 to advance the meter. It can give you multipliers of x1, x2, x3, x4 or x5.
The only way to trigger the free spins game is to reach level 5 on either or both meters. If you reached the top level on the Freegames Meter, you’ll get 20 free spins with the current multiplier on the Multiplier Meter, and if you reached the top on the Multiplier Meter you’ll get a number of free spins with a x5 win multiplier. The best thing that can happen is to reach the top of the meters simultaneously, as then you’ll get 20 free spins with a x5 win multiplier. There is a special symbol that only appears during the free spins, on reel 3, and whenever it lands it will award +1 extra free spin.
Conclusion
Dragon & Knights is basically a very simple game in which you progress your way to getting either 20 free spins or a x5 win multiplier, or, in rare cases, both. This kind of predictability is good for the player as the playing session may then be ended right after the feature, and the Scatters don’t take up valuable space on the reels either. Theoretical return to player (RTP) is good enough, so the game definitely has quality, and many players will like it because of the way the free spins are triggered. It’s not a slot game with a high production value, but it has its good sides. Go ahead and play it, you might just enjoy Dragon & Knights. Especially if you’re a classic slot player.
